LEO Satellites - Opportunities and Challenges in India

Description: LEO satellite constellations are going to change the way we connect and communicate. It has the potential to change the last-mile delivery of telecom services, connect rural areas and come up with new models of IOT services. The Indian government has already liberalised the telecom licenses to enable back haul connectivity using satellites and is expected to soon liberalise the satcom sector by way of the new SpaceCom Policy.

Charles Mudd, Principal, Mudd Law, United States
Charles Mudd Jr. is the principal of Mudd Law and represents companies in the Internet and space sectors.  Since 2017, he has substantive contributed to the development of space policy including attendance and participation at United Nations space law conferences.  This year, he testified in Washington, D.C., collaborated with the IDA in filing a regulatory comment, submitted a letter to the UNEP, and participated in SATCON1 on issues related to satellites and dark skies.  In 2020, he became elected to the International Institute of Space Law.  He also serves as a board member of ITechLaw and NewSpace Chicago.

Nikhil Narendran is a Partner in Trilegal in the TMT and general corporate practice area. Nikhil has substantial experience in advising telecom, media, and technology companies on a range of regulatory and contractual matters such as in relation to content liability, convergent networks, IP licensing and structuring, technology transfers and licensing arrangements, satellite, new technology models, outsourcing, data protection, data services, voice services, VOIP, etc. He advises new-age e-commerce and technology companies in India on their business models and regulatory issues including data protection. He was the winner of the ITechLaw Association's (formerly Computer Law Association) Travelling Fellowship Award 2011 as a part of which he worked at six European firms specializing in TMT. He is currently the Co-Chair of the ITechLaw Substantive Law committee on Interactive Entertainment & Media and is on the board of directors of ITechLaw.
